Flu season is quickly approaching and that means it is time to get your flu shot!
What is the Flu?
The flu is a highly common contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. The flu virus is believed to spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or possibly their nose.
Where Can I Get a Flu Vaccine?
UHS is holding a campus-wide Flu Vaccine Clinic on Thursday, October 19th from 11:00am – 6:00 pm in the Goergen Athletic Center. The UHS Flu Vaccine Clinic is open to all students, staff, and faculty. No appointments are needed. The clinic will be fully staffed to move everyone through quickly and efficiently. Bring your health insurance card or a copy of your card to the clinic. The UR Student Health Insurance Plan (Aetna) covers the cost of the vaccine. If you have questions, please write to [email protected]
If you are unable to attend the clinic, be sure to schedule an appointment at UHS at 585-275-2662 for your flu shot.
Alana’s Foundation National Flu Vaccine Challenge
The University of Rochester is participating in the College/University National Flu Vaccine Challenge, sponsored by Alana’s Foundation in memory of Alana Yaksich, a 5 ½ year old who died from influenza in 2003. All you need to do is: 1. Get a flu shot. 2. Go to Alana’s Foundation to fill out a quick survey. That’s all there is to it! Let’s be the college with the most students reporting they received a flu shot this year.
